CONSEQUENCIES OF THE FALL OF EMPIRE 1817-1899 The final breakdown of Oyo Empire following the Fulani conquest of Ilorin in 1817 resulted in long civil wars in Yorobaland. These wars which lasted from 1821 to 1893 are too complex to be easily understood, the state of civil strife in Yorobaland was aggravated by the struggle for supremacy among the provincial kings or Obas to the south they took the opportunity of the confused situation to expand their states at the expense of each other. The Owu war 1829-1825 is a typical example.
